Scholarships

 

Michigan Sugar Company is proud to offer several scholarships to students in our sugarbeet growing areas. Some scholarships are administered by Michigan Sugar Company and others are by the College.

 

ALBERT FLEGENHEIMER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship was initiated by Michigan Sugar Company in 1974 in memory of Albert Flegenheimer, Chairman of the Board from 1963-1970. The scholarship consists of an award of $2,500 to the student's account at the college of choice for a high school senior who has completed a documented Youth Sugarbeet Project.

PHIL BRIMHALL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Michigan Sugar Company administers the Phil Brimhall Memorial Scholarship on behalf of his family. Phil Brimhall was the Chief Agronomist at Michigan Sugar until the late 1990's. This scholarship of $1,000 follows the same criteria as the Albert Flegenheimer Memorial Scholarship.

THE GUY BEALS MEMORIAL 4-H SCHOLARSHIP

The Guy Beals Memorial 4-H Scholarship fund was established in January 2004 from donations of company shareholders and private individuals. Michigan Sugar Company administers this scholarship of $500 to a deserving high school senior who has completed and documented a Sugarbeet project. The scholarship is given to the recipient who qualifies with the maximum amount of points earned in the sugarbeet project competition and awarded the scholarship at the annual Sugarbeet Project Banquet held in January of each year.

Applicants must be located in the East district (Sanilac, Huron or St. Clair counties). Please contact an East district 4-H Leader or Michigan Sugar Company Agriculturist for details.

 

MICHIGAN SUGAR QUEEN SCHOLARSHIP

Each year, Michigan Sugar Company offers young women, between the ages of 18 to 23, an opportunity to represent its company and industry by serving as the Michigan Sugar Queen and Court. At the Michigan Sugar Festival held in Sebewaing in June of each year, a new Michigan Sugar Queen is crowned and given a $2,000 scholarship. Two court attendants are also crowned and each of them receives a $1,000 scholarship. Contestants must be at least a one year resident in one of the 21 counties in the state of Michigan in which sugarbeets are grown. A general knowledge of the sugarbeet industry and about the company will also be required.

Interested contestants should complete an application and submit with two references, as well as a recent picture of themselves. The Michigan Sugar Queen Selection Committee will contact the selected finalists for a brief interview prior to the formal crowning ceremony in June. MICHIGAN SUGAR COMPANY HOTEL RESTAURANT/RESORT MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP

The Michigan campus of Northwood University administers this scholarship on behalf of Michigan Sugar Company. The $1,000 scholarship will provide monies to deserving students enrolled in the Hotel Restaurant/Resort Management program of study. Awards for the scholarship will be based upon demonstrated financial need and academic merit. BIG CHIEF SCHOLARSHIP

Saginaw Valley State University administers a $1,500 scholarship for full-time students intending to pursue a degree from the College of Business and Management or the College of Science, Engineering and Technology. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need. MICHIGAN SUGAR SCHOLARSHIP FOR HONORS STUDENTS

Delta College administers a $1,500 scholarship for a graduating high school senior with a 3.0 GPA or higher who is pursuing a degree from the College of Business, Management, Communications, Science, Technology or Engineering. The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student for the academic year (Fall and Winter terms). Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.
